Another one of K9U's "Therapy" dogs hard at work - we're proud !!!

Volunteers can make a world of difference, especially for people who need their spirits lifted. One of the hardest working volunteers at Integris Baptist is on four paws. Diana Ross - better known as Rossi - is a 3-year-old poodle and the hospital's only therapy dog. Rossi makes rounds, starting in pediatrics, lifting spirits and driving away fears wherever she goes.

Canine buddies:

........ Hi I’m Trace.  My prior owner thought that I would like to retrieve dead birds.  That meant  I would have to go into water, go through fields or even jump out of a boat!  Well, I found the water cold, the fields unrecognizable and I wasn't leaving the boat for anything!

One day I heard my prior owner call me the “S” word.  Yes, you read right – the dreaded “S” word.  "Sissy".  My little puppy heart was broken.  Such a slur!  I thought we were living in politically correct times.  Shortly after that, I started my new life in my forever home.  I got to meet Angel at K9 University after I left the puddle in the pet store and started going nuts whenever I saw a squirrel.   It was sooo frightening.  I had to ride in the car, go through the doors, see people I hadn't seen before and wait!

I was enrolled in an obedience class.  I just really wasn't sure about any of this.  I spent my first class about 10 feet away from everyone else.  My owner started using methods shown to her in class and the world didn't seem so scary.  My owner also started doing conditioning sessions in the house to help me realize that squirrels were allowed on my territory and it was no big deal.  Nowadays, I see them all the time while I’m patrolling the perimeter.  I keep a close eye on them (just in case) but I don’t jump around or bark hysterically when I see them.

When I graduated from my first class, the instructors said that I had the potential to be a social butterfly.  When we graduated from our second class, the instructors named me as an explorer.  Recently my owner and I were passing the door to the office, I saw a group of poor humans, deprived of the ability to pet an animal!  I stepped up to the plate (or should I say walked through the door) and made myself available for petting.

In conclusion, I would like to share my thoughts about going to K9 University and the effect it has had on me:

  • More rides in the car !!!!
  • More affection from my owner !!!!
  • The big blue cans out in the neighborhood are only garbage cans and won’t attack you.
  • You can increase your chances of scoring pets when you walk farther in the neighborhood. I find that approaching the human with a slight tail wag and gentle gait works the best.  It also yields more mailboxes to sniff and mark.
  • People in pet stores frequently have treats.  Play your cards right and you can score some!  If all else fails, work the cashier!  As they are handing the receipt over, gently walk around the end of the counter and wag your tail.
  • Squirrels are put on this earth to drive dogs nuts.  Ignore them.  They’ll get discouraged and go chatter at some other dog.

I would like you all to come out to K9 University and train.  You’ll love it.  Your owner will love the improvement in your behavior and if you play your cards right, you just might be able to meet and play with me!

See you soon, Trace ........

Okay, I will say it point blank.  If anyone wants to hear a testimonial, I have two dogs that are so well behaved they were welcomed into my neighbor’s home while I was on my honeymoon. I came home to nothing but compliments about my pups. They said they were so well behaved. ................. ....................... ............. .............. ............... ....... ......... Great dog training is a family thing, all ages should participate -- do you see why?
Do you need a better testimony than a 2year old walking her buddies? This is Camryn and her dad James, merrily walking Toby and Izzy.
Can your dogs do this?

Thanks for offering the behavior modification workshops. That one Sunday afternoon class with you, Debbie and the three other dog owners got Titus (my Rottweiler) and me on the right track to get over his fear-aggression response, so well that after only another couple of weeks of work on our own, he was able to meet complete strangers without any aggression or jumping. He now catches himself when he gets the urge to jump at passing cars or bicycles, so that I haven't had to pull him back for quite some time now. Titus is now a welcome guest at church pot-lucks, and my friends are no longer afraid of him. Also, just like you predicted, the behavior modification didn't affect his territorial protective instincts at all. He still guards "his" house from intruders (i.e., from anyone I haven't invited through the door), just like he always did. Thanks again!

Heartland Lab Rescue ("HLR") has rescued over 500 dogs since we began our rescue efforts in 2006.  While most of the dogs we take in have had little to no training (which is usually why they are in need of rescue) - we have seen an increasing rise in dogs with serious social and behavioral problems which makes these otherwise great dogs, ineligible for adoption.  K9 University has been instrumental in helping HLR give these wonderful dogs the second chance they deserve.

K9 University has not only provided basic obedience training for some of our free-spirited labs, but have tackled some of our more difficult cases without question -- dogs exhibiting aggression, anxiety and fear --  dogs that otherwise had no good options were given a new leash on life through the care and training provided at K9 University.  It has been a truly amazing experience to see dog after dog go through the specialized training provided at K9 University and come out at the other end, a happy well adjusted dog.

HLR can say without reservation, without the expertise training received at K9 University these troubled dogs would never know the love and happiness of a family and home.

HLR highly recommends K9 University from everything to obedience training to any specialized need you may have -- there in no dog K9 University cannot help.

Dear Mr. Soriano,
I wish to let you know how pleased I am with the progress of "Rose", a mixed Lab. This dog belongs to "Friends with Four Paws", group which attempts to adopt unwanted dogs. Rose demonstrated "fear aggression" to such a degree that the group believed she was not adoptable.

I took her to your 1 1/2 hour "Fear Aggression" class. This was Rose's last chance before being labeled as not adaptable. After just one class session, her actions completely changed. She no longer growls and barks at people who just happen to be walking in the same area or passing by. I have used the "STOP" command (which is my word to correct Rose) to stop her from doing other bad habits. I have a 6ft stockade fence. Rose can climb over it by jumping high enough to get her front paws on the top and pulling herself up and over. If I catch her before she is over, and yell "STOP", she will not go over. She just jumps down back into the yard.

I am looking forward to doing additional work with Rose. I believe she will be a great adaptable dog very quickly. I praise your University as the instruction is excellent, and the results are fantastic.

Sincerely, Vivian Winterman.

Debbie, thanks so much…

Gracie and I had such fun in your Basic and Intermediate Obedience Classes.   Thank you for your kindness, patience, and great sense of humor.  You definitely made our time at K9 University a positive experience.   I will see you again at K9U.  Any volunteer positions available?

Anyway, Thank you, Debbie Von Feldt

For my 13th birthday my parents finally decided to get me a golden retriever puppy.  I decided to name her Daisy, and she was the perfect addition to our family. She got along with our other dogs and she was very intelligent.  She was the most adorable puppy I had ever seen, but she grew very quickly.  Before I knew it she was pulling on the leash, chewing on the furniture, and stealing things out of the trash.  I was completely overwhelmed until we started going to K9 U.  Daisy went from the puppy class all the way to intermediate agility and we had a blast.  Not only did we learn obedience, but we also learned how to correct her bad behaviors.  Now Daisy is 2 years old, and I couldn't ask for a better dog.  She heels beautifully, is the most socialized dog I've ever met, and her recalls are very enthusiastic.  We had  so much  fun that  we  enrolled in the CGC class, and she was great.  Now she is about to take the TDI test to become a therapy dog, and there is absolutely no way  we would have been able to do it without Angel and all the other great trainers at K9 U.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! ............ Erica and Daisy May

We just wanted to thank you for sharing your expertise with us to teach us how to better discipline Abbie and Malachi. We were truly worried that we may have to take Abbie back because of her aggression with strangers. Because of her past, and Malachi's at that, we had to learn new techniques to teach them that not all strangers are bad! After six weeks of basic obedience class, Abbie has evolved into the equivalent of a social ham.   Malachiis definitely showing signs of improvement the more we get him out amongst strangers.

Classes were truly a highlight of our week, and we are grateful to have met all of you. Don't grow too accustomed to not having us around, though, because we will definitely be back in the summer! Thank you, again, for bringing out the best in our dogs; traits we knew they possessed but just needed to be brought out.

Very sincerely, Brad and Julie Sanders

Hi Guys!  We just got home from our last class of Basic Obedience, and believe it or not..we graduated! I have to give you all a huge thank you for your Basic Obedience Class! It has been wonderful.

After being told that my 5 year old German Shepherd had an aggressive behavior that could never be corrected, I was devastated.  I found K9 University listed in the yellow pages and spoke to Angel. Angel set aside a time to meet Dakota, and after about 2 minutes figured out that Dakota just needed some basic obedience and A LOT of socialization skills.

Heather, Angel and Debbie made classes great. I am now able to take Dakota out on the town for walks and I am not scared anymore. I have returned to being the leader of the pack, and I am looking forward to continuing our training at the K9U.
There was one other thing that happened during our training that surprised me. I always knew Dakota was there to protect me, but we created a unique bond during this time. He really listens to me now and almost always seems to look to me for approval for everything he does. He seems happier too. You have a #1 training facility with the best trainers in it. I have recommended it to all.

See you in October,  Tracey Evans and Dakota
